the Netscape Portal and will no doubt continue across
the entire
Netscape Community.
So I do not hold out too much hope unless otherwise
advised, as to the future of the support pages, guides and tutorials
across their network.
Over the past five years I have written to them on a
number of occasion's to get some answers and clarity, especially with
reference to
the Netscape UK portal (http://www.netscape.co.uk) but never
seem to get a satisfactory reply.
I still believe to this day, that AOL (Time Warner) have
never really known what to do with Netscape and in my eyes is
sacrilege, as the name and the ideal of Netscape is a global treasure
that we have all at one time or another, shared and come to know in our
lives.
Todays News reports that AOL has lost some million plus
subscribers to ISP services in the past three to six months. A further
announcement today from AOL advising of the loss of 6,000 jobs. It's
too late now, but Time
Warner bosses must be crazy. They should of nailed AOL and incorporated
that
into Netscape.
I am sure had they of done so. retaining team
development members
(direct staff) and the Dev Edge Community Members (WWW developers), who
like
myself created, for the good of the web community and with a love and
affinity.
Netscape would be still a market leader today, competing
against the likes of Google.
Clearly the case has been and for a very long time and
now understand why I never got satisfactory answers is demonstrated as
a clear lack of knowledge and direction by appointed incumbents.
On A Brighter Note:
So as long as there's life still in me I will continue to provide new
Netscape bundles free for download, plug ins, tutorials, FAQ's and
continue with
updating the manuals so they are available online. I do have some good
news
in some respects. I have been signed off work for a year due to
exhaustion,
so it will give me the valuable time to really build the site to it's
full
potential and entirety. I will keep you posted of updates in our
classic Retro
Newswire that is out monthly, alternatively sign up free to our
classic directly to your In-box newsletter and alerts.
Mediacasts 'Live Time Desktops':
Other News, I wanted to re-developer the Netcaster
services now that we have broadband which was the stumbling block all
those years ago.
It wasn't the technology developed but the connectivity using 28kbps
modems
into consumer homes known as the last mile of copper. But regrettably I
still
never got any satisfactory replies here either and I am very conscious
when
it comes to intellectual property rights, but the whole thing right
across
the board is very grey and messy which is a great shame. So I did not
despair,
but rather use the name Netcaster which wanted to do I am close to
finishing
off a range of live time desktop services called 'Mediacasts' which
will
be available shortly. I am not going to put a date to it, as I am
determined
in November to make available for free download our Netscape Navigator
Suite
8.01cnmp which will come complete as a suite with a proxy server for
home
internet sharing, real media player 10.5 gold, Mozilla 1.7+ for
composing
and web authoring (wysiwyg). Plus other software programmes and
resources
accompanied with tutorials to help web enthusiasts starting out where
they
have all the essential software to get up and running, including the
ability
to author and compose rich media content.
New Technical User Support Web
Site:
I have configured a new sub domain and web site for
Netscape user technical support which is http://riversidenetworks.net/netscapeuk/
I am designing the chrome in classic colours and themes as a retro club
site with the useful links web page of other Netscape buddy web sites
in
the theme of Sky Pilot. As a preview I have provided a screen shot of
both
the new support site header and the sky pilot theme in a PNG format for
greater
impact of colour and speed of download. If you would like to contribute
with
your thoughts in the original spirit of the web of those early hazy
innocent
days. I look forward to hearing from you and you can send articles or
comments via
our Ask Gecko Cgi Interface.
Classic Retro Banners and
Buttons:
Retro Buttons and banners will be available shortly for Netscape lovers
and friends who wish to put them on their sites linking to our new
retro Netscape
user technical support web page. I have recently re-drawn the Netscape
Navigator
wheel and designed some classic theme wallpaper in a number of
formats that you are welcome to grab and use. The web page is here,
with instructions for our new members of the World Wide Web.
Keep coming back, and thanks for dropping by, signing off now 'Netscape
